EMC to use solid-state disk drives this week sure had a lot of people talking, if not necessarily the end of the standard disks at least a viable alternative to near-line storage in the enterprise.
But the question remains: Is it just the price of SSDs that limit their ability to perform enterprise-class level, or there are technical / performance considerations?
Let us first see exactly what was said at EMC World this week. The company said that SSDs will use during the enterprise-class storage arrays, with the expectation that the increased demand will cause prices to fall to the level of the Fiber Channel drives in the period 2010-2011. Computer World cites EMC Executive VP Dave Donatelli saying:
The flash market is down significantly faster than the rotating discs at the moment. Our goal declared corporate we try to ride down as fast as we can.
Two important considerations for EMC, the throughput improvement that flash technology offers and its ability to improve data deduplication through improved search.
But it would be a mistake to assume that EMC thinks that SSD's are the only station of the future. In fact, The Register quotes Donatelli quite clear:
Us are by no means saying that spinning disks are dead - we see mixed environments. The disc will be around for a long time, especially ATA drives.
This is clearly the case when it comes to exchanging tape-based backup systems. The company unveiled a series of three Disk Library systems that couple spin-drive technology with dedupe, to drive spin-down and other techniques to increase capacity while cutting power requirements. The top-level DL 4000 system scales in petabytes with 1 TB SATA drives spinning as low as 5400 RPM.
Meanwhile it seems that Intel is determined in the SSD market this year. The company expects third quarter launch of its client's X18-M line, a 1.8-inch drive for the Centrino notebook and Client X25-M 2.5-inch device that could find its way into enterprise servers. The first releases are expected to be 80 GB Serial ATA interfaces with units, with the potential for 160 GB version at the end of year and 250 GB in early 2009.
This is all very well in terms of price and availability, said Amyl Ahola, CEO of flash drive maker Pliant Technology in its Enterprise Storage Sense blog. But the fact is that SSD's still not close to compliance with the MTBF and error-rate specifications demanded in the company to do come. What is needed is an advanced error correction techniques that preserve the integrity of the station, even after multiple erase / write cycles, and not hinder I / O performance to boot.
I wonder off, then, if it is safe to assume that Flexible Technology is close to the announcement of such a system?
