Explore the Asus EeePC
Introduced by Jonney Shih, chairman and CEO of ASUS at Intel's keynote speech the first day of the show, the Eee PC is already headlines world wide.
We found the small seven inch, 800 x 480-pixel display pretty easy on the eyes, especially compared to Ultra-Mobile PCs like the OQO model 02 (5 inches) and FlipStart 1.0 (5.6 inch), but most users do not have that point of reference. A three-year-old accustomed to a 14-inch LCD did not mind the screen, while having fun with Mickey and friends was on Playhousedisney.com. On the other hand, we see many people over the age of 50 years using this device as their primary computer unless they connect to a bigger external LCD, which start at about $ 170.
The general design of the Eee PC is fairly solid and incredibly travel-friendly for the price. Our white model (black and other colors come later) features an SD Card slot, two USB ports and a VGA port on the right. An additional USB port, Ethernet and modem jacks, headphone and line and microphone jacks on the left. The keyboard is cramped but is just big enough to affect the type, the biggest annoyance is the proximity of the up arrow key and Shift key Right, we accidentally move a line several times while trying to capitalize a letter. And although we are not united in spirit, slightly chintzy-feeling touchpad button you can turn left or Right-click on, our kid tester found it confusing.
You will not have much in the way of hardware for just over 200 pounds, but the Eee PC should not be depreciated. It uses an Intel Mobile Celeron M ULV 900 MHz CPU, which is designed for long battery life rather than hardcore maths. The Asus version ships with 512 MB RAM standard, though other resellers such as RM offer versions with 256MB RAM. If you intend to tinker heavily with the machine or install Windows, we recommend the 512 model.
A of the biggest selling points is the machine that uses a solid state hard drive (SSD). The largest model Asus supplies is 4GB, 33 percent of which is already in use when you buy the machine .* Even some manufacturers offer a 2GB SSD and it is possible to connect a large memory card to the SD card slot for extra storage.
On the left of the panel Eee PCs, the notebook has two USB 2.0 ports, an audio and microphone port, a 10/100 Ethernet port, phone port and a 56K modem. To show how thin the Eee PC is, I used a NT $ 10 coin, similar in size of a U.S. half-dollar coin. As you can see, the Eee PC is very thin.
The right the screen of the Eee PC 701 has two USB 2.0 ports, a VGA output, and even a flash card reader. The notebook uses a 4-cell battery that gives it only about 3 hours of battery life when in motion. As you may have noticed, there are no optical drives included with the Eee PC, and there is no room to add to the laptop itself, so any DVD burners will be installed remotely using one of the Eee PC 701 four USB 2.0 ports.
The Eee PC does not use a Microsoft operating system, which is part of the reason why so cheap. Instead, Asus supplies its own Linux-based graphical user interface. The laptop also ships with about 40 applications, which arguably is more than you would get with a standard Windows laptop. It includes Firefox for browsing the web, Skype, OpenOffice and SMPlayer for video playback.
Course is a Linux machine, users can download an amount of open source software - as long as it will fit on the hard disk. The Eee PC is theoretically fast enough to run Windows XP, which is great news for those of us without beards walk.
It is difficult to fault the Eee PC, mainly because of the price. It can be difficult to use because of tight keyboard, but it is better than similar sized laptops like the Toshiba Libretto. If you're in the market for half PC, or looking for something you can take you almost anywhere, The Eee PC is definitely worth buying.
