Panasonic has just released the new Panasonic U1 Ultra, a really cool notebook for mobile person. This rugged notebook is powered by Intel Atom Z530 (1.6 Giga Hz), 2 gigabytes of memory, 64 GB SSD and WiFi Link 5100 802.11a/b/g. This 1 kg netbook is equipped with touch screen 1024 x 600 pixels with 6000 nits of brightness.
Panasonic Toughbook U1 Ultra is claimed can be used up to 6 hours without recharging. Panasonic Computer Solutions Company, manufacturer of durable, reliable Panasonic Toughbook ® mobile computers, today announced the availability of the Panasonic Toughbook U1, the first ultra mobile PC (UMPC) to integrate the new low power Intel ® Atom ™ processor in a rugged handheld computer for field use. With the introduction of the extremely portable Toughbook U1 Panasonic.
This netbook is a fully equipped computer running Windows XP or Vista on the new Intel Atom processor, fully compatible with any PC application. In combination with standard Toughbook's security components, such as to withstand a four foot drop onto concrete, the device may prove to be a winner between doctors and nurses working in hospitals.
What makes the U1 particularly suitable for health care is a combination of the design considerations put. Because of the cooler, more efficient Intel Atom processor, the U1 is no ventilation ports through which fluid can enter. The device is essentially sealed, and Panasonic claims it can take a splash and keep ticking. (Just do not take it diving with you. It is not waterproof.)
Nursing staff and IT department will be pleased to know that the U1 sports two separate battery slots, allowing the user to hot swap batteries without turning off the unit. A hospital can even buy multi-battery chargers to hang on the wall at the stations for the nurse around the clock operation. Somehow it seems this feature was specifically designed with nurses in mind, which is enough to think about, not to deal with complicated battery changes during peak hours.
The screen is 5.6 inches and is entirely touch sensitive, which means it can be controlled with your finger, not just the stylus like so many tablets are needed. (The advantage is obvious once The stylus is accidentally returned to the desk.)
Optionally, connect with a barcode scanner, which can be used to keep track of the equipment or medicines, and a built- webcam, as we envisage can be used in a futuristic communications system between physicians in a hospital.
Not to say that this is a good general replacement for a real laptop, because it has only 1 GB of RAM and tops out at 32 GB for a solid state disk drive, but fun all the data and tomographic images of the patient's wireless reach on the bed to have.
