Going to solid state disk - the most I can afford is 64GB?
so I should be aware as much size hard drive (SSD) is. What is less space, Windows7 or is Vista 64bit, 64bit Vista like me, but I hear very good things about Windows7. I appreciate your input. I also noticed there are several types of solid state disks. Like Mini-PCI Express and SATA.
Yes, I would go with 7 as it is available, it is really optimized for SSD's, and helps increase their life / speed (in principle, by automatically disabling any feature introduced in Vista to optimize regular HDD speed, but there are other features, including support TRIM making Windows 7 vs Vista more attractive if you use a SSD.). Moreover, I believe Windows 7 is slightly smaller, but not that you would have a problem with a 64GB HDD. More Detailed information about Vista vs 7 on SSDs and why exactly, it is better to use with SSD's can be found here: http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/05/05/support-and- qa-for-solid-state drives-and.aspx What if the choice of an SSD, there are really two different types of large-scale selling SSDs. SLC and MLC. Simply put, in a word, where possible, SLC (single level cell) is faster than MLC (multi level cell) mainly for write operations. Although you probably get a new computer before the life of the MLC ends, just to compare, MLC's tend to last about 7 to 10 years, while the SLC are expected to last less than 49 to 149 years (however, it will probably be obsolete in 149 years, anyway, not only will we now, more than billions YOTTAbytes, but I personally would predict transistors generally completely obsolete in that time) .. The Memo Right 128GB SLC SSD claims to last over 200 years, btw (invented 2 years ago). MLC SSDs tend to write data to approximately 1 / 2 as fast as SLC SLC's, hold on average 100MB / s read / write, while the MLC's do like 80/50mb 's read / write (still far beyond what any HDD can do, especially when you take time to access). It is third type, which are out of them all: DRAM, but not be manufactured cost-effective yet ... As such MiniPCIe vs SATA, MiniPCIe has a PCIe 1x lane, and thus has a theoretical maximum speed of 0.25 GByte / s, while SATA could rise to 3 GBytes / s. But no hard drive can be close to maintaining this rate to get, so it's a toss up. I personally would get (and get) one SATA SLC SSD. However, there is one last thing to note: if you do not mind you not MLC After 7 years, and do not mind the performance drop, they are actually cheaper per byte compared to SLC. That's because they hit more (right now 2) bytes per cell (and this is the reason why they are less reliable and slower), for ex, a 64GB MLC, about 1 / 2 the cells would have a 64GB SLC, making it cheaper / more or less easy to produce (at a price ... I mentioned). Finally, a quick search on newegg.com yields these results: The best SLC SSD (on Newegg, of course): Intel X25-E Extreme: 2.5 "64GB SLC SATA II - Sequential Access - Read: up to 250 MB / s - Sequential Access - Write: up to 170 MB / s - Average Seek Time: less than 0.1ms - Price: $ 669.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167014 MLC SSD (note the higher capacity): Intel X25-M: 2.5 "160GB SATA II MLC - Sequential Access - Read: up to 250MB / s - Sequential Access - Write: Up to 70MB / s - Average Seek Time: less than 0.1ms - Price: $ 599.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx? item = N82E16820167015 Super Crazy fast SCSI HDD (spiders, not fixed): HP 411089-B22 3.5 "300GB 15000 RPM Ultra320 SCSI - Sequential Access - Read: 40 MB / s - Sequential Access -- Write: 40 MB / s - Average Seek Time: 3.8ms - Price: $ 849.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822332010 Oh yes, BTW: Intel SSDs (which came as a surprise to me, actually) are by far the highest quality, without debate. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at zjblabs@zjblabs.co.cc I need within a few minutes (depending on the size of the reply warranted) if you e-mail me at any reasonable hour in the noon CST.
