The hard drive is where you will store all your stored files, documents, programs and applications. Hard drives can retain information for years on end. They can even survive their owners.
If you choose the components needed to build your own computer, do not forget the HDD. You must have at least one hard drive in your computer. This is where the files are stored on your system.
Many modern motherboards support two Integrated Drive Electronics or IDE hard drives. IDE disks also known as PATA or Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment drives. This is an older technology, however, and IDE hard drives have been largely succeeded by Serial ATA SATA drives or discs.
If you want to hold a large collection of songs and movies, you can add more hard disk space. You can easily remedy this additional hard drives. Very hard disks can be placed inside your computer case (internal HDD) or outside (external HDD).
External drives can be quite advantageous if there is not enough space in the computer case. Depending on the connectivity requirements, external hard drives can be classified into three types: connected via a USB port, a FireWire port and require an external SATA or sDATA port.
You can build a PC flash memory or solid state drive (SSD) instead of the hard disk. SSD is a relatively new technology, however, and the price tag is no fun to watch. Not offer much storage space as the hard drives. The advantage SSDs have over hard disks for speed and power. SSDs are much faster and consumes less power than hard drives.
Looking forward, it will probably SSDs of the hard disk obsolete. But for now, a HDD is a cost effective solution for your home built computer.
