Super Thin, Super Light Vaio X
Sony Vaio X touting as the thinnest, lightest notebook the planet - and the potential. Weighing just 655g and only 13.9mm thick, it beats the Apple MacBook Air 1.36kg and 19.4mm, and is aimed at the style conscious business user.
Sony claims a battery life as long as sixteen hours, but you must extended battery to ensure that adding a few millimeters to a considerable amount of depth and weight of the machine. Routine, you get eight hours of freedom. The 11.1in diagonal, 1366x768 resolution screen is lit by energy-saving LED technology and you can select one of the 3 Solid State Disk (SSD) sizes: 64GB, 128GB or 128GB. Only with a 64GB SSD and without the optional 3G HSPA module is able to achieve 655g, the added elements to encourage weight by 130g to 785g. Still not much of a heavyweight.
The lightweight carbon fiber area is either matte or gloss finish, depending on whether you define, respectively, the top-end VPC-X11Z1E / X with a 2-GHz Atom processor and a 256GB SSD, or the entry-level VPC-X11S1E / B, which sports a 1.86 GHz and 128GB SSD. The matte-finish entry level model is arguably more attractive and, unlike the top-end model, do not constantly polishing to fingerprint to remove, but I was assured by the product manager the model includes a glossy rag. Both come with 2GB DRAM, an Intel graphics subsystem and 802.11n WiFi connectivity. Also standard are two USB ports, a neat, space saving Ethernet port, SD card and Sony Memory Stick slot, Bluetooth and a camera. You also get VGA out to power a projector.
regardless of the difficult names, the designs are both attractive and so easy to hang with and use. Ease of use features include a multi-touch pad finger, although I did not test this, and it comes with Windows Seven. The only question mark is the screen: it is just over 2mm thick and bends alarming, but it does not seem to be suffering picked up by the corner of the panel.
The Sony Vaio X is a very attractive piece of kit that the high end desirability scale of the hits, but only spent some time telling if it delivers what it guarantees. Expect a full review in these pages soon.
Available from November 2009, the entry-level Vaio X costs £ 1299, the top-end costs £ 1799.
