Solid State Drive Recommendations?
I am interested in replacing my SCSI drives with an internal or external SSD option. I have read other posts which shows that SSD drives can be a bit picky. I have a dual processor HP workstation with Windows XP Pro. I'm tempted to buy a SATA adapter and a compatible SSD, however, I 'm not sure how that all works and if the SSD is a bootable disk. It seems to be predominantly external SSD drives? Any case, the SSD thing is completely new to me. In my previous life I was a systems engineer, but I'm not tracking technology. Any info / recommendations you can offer will be very useful. To summarize: I'm Looking for an SSD application I can add in my 5 years old PC to serve as the main hard disk (bootable). I would be a cheap external drive, but I will cross that bridge I like. A 64 GB SSD drive will probably be suitable for my needs. Thanks, Mike
I would steer you away from them unless you are very sold on them. Especially on an older computer. They are much more expensive, much smaller, and not really faster or better on energy at this time. Next year is the time to buy SSD. At this time you could send to a WD VelociRaptor drive. Fast, cheap, reliable, bigger. You can get two of these for what it would cost you to get an SSD. Assuming that your system handle, you can set up 2 RAID 1 and have complete data redundancy in the unlikely event of a failure. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=velociraptor&x=0&y=0 It is a disk (SSD), but very fast, quiet, and strangely enough 2.5 "with a 3.5" heatsink around. If you get a SATA adapter, you must be able to good start, but maybe you should select the bootable add in card as the default boot device in your BIOS. If you MUST ...
